Community leaders are conveners, translators, and trust builders; they are the infrastructure of trust. When they move, communities move.

We would like community leaders to take the following steps:

  • Host monthly “Democracy Circles” at libraries, faith centers, or parks. These gatherings provide regular opportunities for community members to come together, discuss important issues, and strengthen democratic engagement.

  • Launch local “Civic Skill Workshops” focused on media literacy, conflict navigation, and community budgeting. These workshops are designed to equip community members with the practical skills necessary to actively participate in civic life.

  • Create cross-group coalitions that bring together parents, students, workers, and elders. By fostering collaboration among diverse groups, community leaders can build stronger, more resilient communities.

Steps for Parents to Support Civic Learning

Parents shape the next generation’s expectations of fairness, responsibility, and shared power.

We would like parents of young schoolchildren to make civic literacy a family habit and a community norm.

  • To initiate “Family Civic Nights” at home. Their gatherings can include activities such as storytelling that highlight civic values, collaborative problem-solving, and community mapping to help children understand their local environment and the importance of active citizenship.

  • Parents can create “Democracy Playgroups” specifically designed for younger children. These playgroups should be led by parents and focus on introducing democratic concepts through  age- appropriate games and activities, fostering an early appreciation for civic participation.

  • We also ask parents to collaborate with schools in bringing civic literacy into classrooms. By partnering with educators, parents can help ensure students gain essential knowledge and skills in civic engagement, fostering a supportive learning environment for democracy.

College Graduates

  • You are not just future workers; you are future stewards of democracy. As you move beyond campus and into the world, remember that your role is greater than simply securing employment or advancing your own ambitions. You hold the responsibility to safeguard and enhance the democratic values that shape our society.

  • Do not limit your growth to passing exams or meeting minimum requirements. Instead, cultivate the ability to critically analyze and challenge the systems around you. Question how things are done and seek out ways to improve them for the betterment of all.

  • As you join and eventually lead the institutions you inherit, insist on transparency in their operations, uphold the dignity of every person involved, and strive to instill a sense of purpose in all that you do. These are the foundations that will allow you to make meaningful contributions and leave a lasting impact.

Moving Beyond Incremental Change
It is time to stop merely tinkering with existing systems and structures. Instead, there is an urgent need for bold and comprehensive frameworks that drive genuine transformation. Incremental changes
are no longer sufficient to address the challenges at hand.

Restoring Dignity, Accountability, and Agency
Meaningful reform requires approaches that restore dignity to labor, hold capital accountable, and empower communities with agency. These guiding principles are essential in creating systems that are fair, just, and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders.
