The American republic was once firmly grounded in the principles of free enterprise, active civic participation, and widespread public trust. These pillars provided stability and encouraged the flourishing of a society in which opportunity and prosperity could be shared by all. However, these foundational elements have weakened due to concentrated power, the spread of disinformation, and ongoing systemic neglect.
Consequences for the Market and Democracy
As these pillars deteriorate, the market no longer serves the broader population. Instead, it increasingly benefits a select few, leaving many behind. Similarly, democracy feels less accessible to ordinary citizens, creating a sense of disconnection and alienation. The vision of shared prosperity, once a hallmark of the American promise, has become out of reach.
Influence of Capitalists
At the heart of these challenges lies the dominance of influential capitalists who exert control over both politics and the economy. Their power shapes the direction of national policies and economic outcomes, further reinforcing the divide between those who benefit from the system and those who are left out.
Understanding these important facts, we created the “Edified Capitalist Institute” (ECI) to support lively communities of university students, college graduates, educators, reform advocates, and American voters. Our goal is to explore how the changing labor market is shaped by sociopolitical and economic institutions, recognizing that:

• Economic conditions shape political conversations, and
• Key players in capitalism steer both politics and the economy.
